meet pedro

It is not an uncommon belief in developing countries that a child born with a cleft is considered cursed. Villagers believe that if a cursed child is allowed to remain in the village, crops and livestock can perish. When Pedro was born, his neighbors saw his cleft condition and demanded that the infant and his mother leave their village immediately. Instead, Pedro’s father rejected the villagers’ beliefs and stood by his wife and son and made the journey to the Smile surgical site in Patzun, Guatemala. Five-month old Pedro underwent a 45-minute procedure that would change his life.
