Imagine handing your baby off to someone you’ve just met. Marta’s mother and her daughter traveled 12 hours by themselves to get to the Smile Network surgery site in Patzun, Guatemala. Their difficult journey began several years before, when Marta’s older brother – also born with a cleft condition – died from failure to thrive after they weren’t able to make it to a mission site. The Smile team worked tirelessly to reassure Marta’s mother that they were going to take care of Marta like she was their own baby. And that’s exactly what they did.
